A Bastrop family escaped a mobile home fire on Sunday thanks to the bravery of a 5-year-old boy.

The fire happened at around 9:45 a.m. off of Highway 71 near Bastrop.

Jesse Richardson said the smell of smoke woke him up around 9:45 a.m. and he remembered to crawl on the floor.

He learned the safety tip from a fire prevention program at school in October.

"Fortunately for me and for Jesse that day he was paying close attention and found out that if he was to wake up and find smoke his house to crawl on the floor and get out to safety, and fortunately his 3-year-old sister copied him and got out," Michelle Bennett of the Bastrop VFD said.

Fire officials say a space heater placed too close to the closet caused the fire.

Authorities want to remind everybody never to place a space heater close to anything that can catch on fire.
