Six members of a south Oak Cliff family scurried to escape their burning apartment. All but one, 3-year-old Devonte Davis, made it out.

Injured relatives tried in vain to rescue Devonte, said Capt. Jesse Garcia, a Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman.

Four children were sleeping in the same bedroom when flames erupted in the two-bedroom downstairs apartment. Devonte's body was found near the front door, Garcia said.

"It appeared he was trying to escape," he said. "Somehow he got lost."

Devonte's 4-year-old brother was severely burned and was being treated at Parkland Memorial Hospital. The other family members were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. At least seven residents of adjacent apartments were treated at the scene.

The fire occurred at the Arborstone Apartments, a two-story complex in the 6500 block of Cockrell Hill Road in south Oak Cliff. The fire was under investigation Thursday afternoon.
