MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) -- Fire swept through a house on the city's north side Thursday, killing a 2-year-old boy who was trapped inside, authorities said.

Trenton J. Prosser was pronounced dead at the scene, apparently from smoke inhalation, Delaware County Coroner Jim Clevenger said.

Fred Cler, a Fire Department battalion chief, said investigators believed the fire started in the living room next to the bedroom where the boy was found.

The fire's cause was not immediately known, but foul play was not suspected.

The child's grandfather, Allen Prosser, was at home when the fire started and was slightly injured in the blaze. One of two firefighters involved in a rescue attempt also was slightly injured.

Neighbor Danny Claspell was visiting a friend when Prosser banged on the front door screaming ``please call 911. My baby is still in there.''

Claspell ran outside and in the front door of the burning home, but was forced out by heat and smoke. He grabbed a ladder and threw it into the boy's bedroom window, shattering it.

``Smoke just barreled out so bad that you couldn't get into it,'' said Claspell. ``The way that fire followed me out of the living room, I didn't think there was much of a chance.''

Firefighters arrived a short time later and entered the home's back door, using thermal imaging cameras to peer through dense smoke in their search for the boy. After a frantic search, they found the boy lying between the bed and a wall.
