MONTREAL (CP) -- A seven-year-old boy was killed early on Wednesday when fire raged through an apartment building in the city's east end.
Fire department spokesman Jean-Louis Bachand said the boy became trapped when the fire broke out a few minutes after midnight.
``At the arrival of the firemen, the father told them his son was still inside the building, he lost him in the smoke,'' said Bachand.
``The firemen went in, they found the child, they brought him outside, they tried to revive him for 40, 45 minutes, all the way up to the hospital.''
The boy was pronounced dead in hospital.
The fire was contained mainly in the single unit that was ravaged by the flames, but about 40 other residents in neighbouring apartments were also driven from their homes.
Investigators believe an electrical malfunction caused the blaze.
