DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) -- A firefighter was fired after her second drunken driving arrest in 18 months.
Michele B. Schroeder, 38, of Davenport, was arrested May 10 after she crashed her car on Interstate 80 near the Brady Street exit, police said.
A breath test indicated her blood-alcohol level was 0.249 percent, more than three times the legal limit, police said.
Schroeder was free on pretrial release, court records said.
Fire Chief Mark Frese said he fired Schroeder the following day because it was her second off-duty drunken driving arrest.
A firefighter arrested for drunken driving would usually be placed on unpaid leave for 30 days, unless they use vacation or personal days, Frese said.
A second arrest for drunken driving leads to termination, he said.
A firefighter arrested for drunken driving on duty would be fired after the first arrest, Frese said.
Schroeder served two days in-home detention after a drunken driving charge in December 2002. She was arrested after a traffic accident in Bettendorf. In that case, a breath test showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.228 percent, court records said.
At the time, the legal limit in Iowa was 0.10 percent.
