LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Weekend fires in two homes killed three people including a 100-year-old woman, and injured four others, officials said.
The woman and an 84-year-old man died in a fire Saturday night in a home in semi-rural Topanga Canyon, which separates Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley from the Pacific Ocean, said Ed Pickett, supervising dispatcher with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Two dogs also died.
The fire was believed to accidental, although an exact cause had not been determined, according to investigators.
The victims' names were not immediately released.
The second fire started early Sunday. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said five men were rescued from a single-story home but a 40-year-old man died later in a hospital.
His name was not immediately released.
The other four victims, all in their 30s, were hospitalized for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The cause of that fire was under investigation.
