The fire broke out shortly before 10:30 p.m. in a second-floor apartment at 93 Centre Mall in the Red Hook houses.

Firefighters said the body was so badly burned, they could not tell the gender. Neighbors said the apartment was occupied by a woman in her 70s.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately determined.

Another tenant, a woman with asthma, was taken to Long Island College Hospital with smoke inhalation.
