A son worked to save his elderly parents from a house fire overnight on Stewarts Ferry Pike in Mt. Juliet.
When crews from Mt. Juliet, Gladeville, and Lebanon responded arrived at the scene, a third of the log cabin style home was fully engulfed in flames. An elderly man and woman lived in the home with their son. Keith Vaughn told News 2 he woke up when he heard a smoke alarm. He was able to get his father in a wheelchair and his mother on a walker to get them out of the house before firemen arrived. Vaughn burned his hands trying to put out the fire, which he says was started in an electric blanket at the end of his bed.
Vaughn said, "I took the bed sheets and tried to fan it out, but it went over top of my bed. I knew Mama and Daddy were in bed, and I went to get them out before the smoke got in the whole house. Smoke was going everywhere."
Firefighters say that the home is unliveable right now. A third of the structure sustained heavy fire damage, and the rest has smoke and water damage.
Fire experts say most fires happen in the home when people are asleep. If you wake up to a fire, you won't have time to grab valuables because fire spreads to quickly and the smoke is too thick.
