If you or a loved one gets involved in an accident you could become part of an experiment without your consent.

The blood substitute is called Polyheme. It's made from human blood cells and like real blood, has the ability to carry oxygen. Richmond is one of about twenty cities around the country participating in a study on Polyheme.

VCU Medical Center is organizing the project. Dr. Therese Duane is the principal investigator in the case. She hopes Polyheme gives surgeons an edge in the operating room.
