Greenwich Township residents have as much reason as anyone to gripe about recurring property tax increases, but when push came to shove last month, most citizens who attended a public hearing spoke in favor of a compromise on the size and cost of a new firehouse for Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1.

That outpouring of public sentiment helped to break a logjam -- and some biting accusations and angry denials -- over plans to build a new firehouse. Last week a majority of the five-member committee signaled its intent to support the amended plan, which calls for a $3.24 million, 14,247-square-foot building with five bays. The public discussion helped to soothe differences that boiled over at a previous meeting, when firefighters and some committee members argued heatedly over what the department needs and what the township can afford.
