A fast-moving fire with flames leaping 25 feet into the sky demolished a 230-year-old historic home in Monroe that township officials said was slated to be demolished to make way for a senior housing complex.

A passing motorist reported the blaze of the two-and-a-half story wooden farmhouse on Cranbury Station Road at 4:05 a.m. Saturday, according to reports.

The home was part of the 80-acre Ely Farm sold by its owners in 1955, said John Katerba, chairman of the township's historic preservation commission.
