NORWICH, Conn. (AP) -- A Texas man who was trying to save a child struggling in the water drowned in the Fairview Reservoir Sunday.

Police said 46-year-old Paul Kennedy's actions helped the child make it to shore. Kennedy, who lives in Austin, Texas, was vacationing in Connecticut, according to a relative.

Police said they received a call from one of the five youths who were swimming with Kennedy just after 4 p.m. reporting that he had drowned.

Four boats, a dive team and 12 people in life vests searched a 3,000-square-foot area before his body was found, said Yantic Fire Chief Frank Blanchard. He was recovered unconscious in 20 to 25 feet of water nearly an hour after the emergency call.

Kennedy was pronounced dead at William W. Backus Hospital.

Public swimming is not allowed in the reservoir, and signs are posted on the gates that say ``No Trespassing.''
