A building used for many horse shows at the Shelby County Fairgrounds was destroyed by a fire yesterday, Shelbyville officials said.
"The fire does not appear to be electrical, but it appears to be accidental," fire department Capt. Raymond Williams said.
Roughly 100 horse stalls and eight tractors were destroyed in the fire, Williams said. No horses were in the stalls at the time of the fire.
A half-hour before the fire, county fairgrounds employees were cleaning and maintaining tractors, he said. No one was at the fairgrounds at the time of the fire.
Fire department officials said the fire began in the center of the building. Several nearby barns were not damaged, Williams said.
The fire was reported at 2:30 p.m. and was was extinguished in two hours. Williams said the building was roughly 200 feet long and 100 feet wide.
No damage estimate was available.
The fairgrounds board of directors was present after the fire started, Williams said. The board not issued a statement about plans for a major horse show scheduled for next month.
