A Gautier man was hospitalized from smoke inhalation Saturday after fire destroyed his 28-foot travel trailer at a fish camp on Roys Road, authorities said.

Firefighters said they believe Cole Adams, 47, was asleep and woke up some time after the fire started near the stove area of the trailer.

"I'm glad we had a fire victim and not a fire fatality at that location," said Gautier Fire Department Lt. Marshall C. Robinson. "That incident had the makings to end in a very tragic manner."

Firefighters put out the fire about 15 minutes after it was reported at 3:15 p.m. near Shimps Time-Out Marina. Robinson said the fire destroyed Adams' $15,000 travel trailer and damaged overhead power lines.

In addition, he said, the heat from the fire caused about $1,500 in damage to an adjacent 35-foot travel trailer that belonged to Joey Matthews of Winnsboro, La.

Adams was taken to Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula for treatment and observation.

Robinson said initial reports indicate that the stove in the trailer had been left on.
