Five San Francisco firefighters are on temporary leave after the fire department began an investigation into possible drug use.

Department officials received a tip about illegal activity at Fire Station Six in the Castro. Fire officials say they went to the station, tested five firefighters for drugs and alcohol and immediately took them off duty. A fire department spokesman says the building was searched, "from top to bottom."

Officials would not say if any evidence was seized from the station or discuss any details about the tip received by the department.

Results of the tests are expected to be back in about a week.

Station Six serves the Castro and Duboce Heights neighborhoods. A fire department spokesman says there have been no previous complaints about the station.

This is not the first time the department has faced substance abuse questions. A few months ago, a veteran firefighter told NBC11 News that firefighters regularly drink on the job.
