All emergency first-responder personnel in the county will be equipped with gas masks to protect against potential terror attacks and the county's health department wants to make a similar investment.
The freeholder board approved a contract Thursday to pay about $300,000, so every city police officer, sheriff's officer and ambulance squad member in the county is provided with a mask.
"They are to protect the first responders in case of a terrorist event," said Joseph Sever, coordinator of the county office of emergency management. "We help each other. We go anywhere to assist if we're called upon. Our people have to be properly protected. That's the bottom line."
