An overnight fire kills one person in Westchester. It happened in an apartment building in Buchanan and now dozens of people are homeless.

(Buchanan-WABC, February 19, 2004) -- An overnight fire kills one person in Westchester. It happened in an apartment building in Buchanan and now dozens of people are homeless.

The fire happened on Brannon Avenue and firefighters are still out at the scene. The fire started around 9:30 p.m. last night and crews from all over Westchester County responded with over 100 firefighters. It happened at a two-story building with 19 apartments and 30 people lived in the building.

Officials say the fire started in the basement apartment and the flames spread quickly and took over the top floor. One man did not get out alive and he lived in the basement apartment. He was in his 30's.

He was a local guy who was well-known and liked in the area. He was also a bartender. There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
