The back wall of the new Delaware City Fire House under construction on 815 Fifth St. collapsed Tuesday morning, injuring two people and delaying the building's opening by up to three months, officials said.

Construction workers were laying wooden beams for the building's banquet-hall ceiling when the cinder-block wall collapsed shortly before 8:30 a.m.

One unidentified man fell about 15 feet and was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he was in stable condition with a possible head injury, New Castle County Paramedic spokeswoman Kelli Starr-Leach said. Another man injured on the scene refused medical treatment, she said.

Delaware City Fire Company Chief Jamie Rosseel said the two men worked for Daystar Sills, the construction company in charge of building the new headquarters.

Rosseel said county building inspectors were investigating the cause of the collapse, but added that high winds could have been a factor.

He said the fire company had hoped to open the new building in April, but the collapse is likely to delay that until July.
