New York City, Firefighters Ready For Second Anniversary

Official New York City ceremonies commemorating the September 11 WTC attack will follow last year's gathering at the site of victim families and the reading of victim names. The "Tribute in Light" will return for the single night, the illumination of two light beams visually portraying the Twin Towers on the Manhattan skyline.

From the Mayor's office: As with last year's commemoration, the City's observance will take place at the World Trade Center site on the morning of Thursday, September 11th. Children will have a large role in this year's ceremony by reading the names of the victim's and performing music throughout the program. The ceremony will pause four times - twice to mark the times that each plane hit the towers and twice to mark the times when each tower fell. The first moment of silence will be at 8:46 a.m. and houses of worship citywide will be encouraged to toll their bells at that time. While the names are read, family members will be able to descend the ramp to the lowest level of the site where they may lay flowers. Former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey will join the Mayor and Governor at the ceremony.

At sundown, the "Tribute in Light" will return for one night as a tribute to the memory of those lost and a symbol of the spirit of the great City of New York. The "Tribute in Light" will be brought back each year for one night on September 11th.

  • 12:00 PM Taps performed by two trumpeters (NYPD and FDNY) Final music performance Program ends
An all agency honor guard made up of individuals representing City, State, Federal and non-profit agencies including NYC Fire Department (FDNY), NYC Police Department (NYPD), Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) and representatives of the victim's families will participate in the ceremony. Members of the honor guard will stand for about 30 minutes and then rotate. In addition, the "Art for Heart" canvas made by children who lost loved ones will be on display at the World Trade Center site and that day, community centers in the tri-state area and the family room at the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation will open their doors to these children. From the Uniformed Firefighters Association, Local 94 IAFF:

September 11 will be a difficult day for all. Many firehouses that lost members will conduct small private ceremonies or masses at their firehouses or nearby. The Chief of Operations has posted ceremonial protocol, which begins at 0846 hours on 9-11, taking place at all firehouses for all on-duty members, where all FDNY family members are invited to attend. The following other events are posted for all members info:

  • At Ground Zero The City's observance takes place at the WTC on the morning of 9-11. At 0700 hours guests start gathering at the site. Priority will be given to 9-11 families, and FF/public access will be accommodated as space allows. The program begins at 0830. At 0846, a moment of silence, followed by reading names of all persons lost on 9-11 while family members descend the ramp to lay flowers. Name reading will continue stopping only for additional moments of silence at 0903, 0959 & 1029 hours. Service concludes at 1200 hours with taps performed by FDNY & NYPD trumpeters followed by a brief music performance. Also, at sundown, the 'Tribute of Light' at WTC will return for one night.
  • At FDNY Headquarters At 1300 hours, a Memorial Service will be held at 9 Metrotech Center, Brooklyn. All members are invited to attend.
  • At Firefighters Monument, Riverside Drive The Companies of the B-18 are hosting the 2nd Annual Memorial Service at the Firefighters Monument on Riverside Drive & 100th St., Upper West Side, Manhattan.
  • 0930: Members assemble
  • 0953: Members form at attention
  • 0959: Moment of silence, followed by reading of 343 members' names lost on 9-11
  • 1029: Moment of silence & placing of the wreath
  • 1215: Mass at St. John the Devine.
All members are invited for this Unofficial Service, and then continue to the 1215 Mass at 1047 Amsterdam Ave. (& 112 St.).
