Democratic lawmakers yesterday attacked a powerful Republican senator for saying that New York City firefighters and police officers should not ask for all of their overtime when they're protecting the Big Apple during the war on Iraq. "Cops and firefighters should sacrifice more? I think they sacrifice enough already," said New York's Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
She and others were responding to a stir caused by Sen. Ted Stevens (R- Alaska) - the head of the Senate's Appropriations Committee - who said Tuesday that the Department of Homeland Security has "more money than it can spend" this year and that cops and firefighters shouldn't be putting in for all of their overtime.
But on the Senate floor yesterday, Stevens successfully spearheaded a move to give hefty raises to soldiers who are abroad or in imminent danger.
Today the Senate is scheduled to vote on an amendment that would give an additional $4.3 billion for homeland security with about $1 billion of that going to high-risk regions like New York.
