A fire aboard a docked navy submarine undergoing maintenance killed one seaman Sunday, officials said.
GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador (AP) -- A fire aboard a docked navy submarine undergoing maintenance killed one seaman Sunday, officials said.

Adm. Manuel Zapater told reporters the seaman was killed when he tried to help firefighters control the blaze on the submarine Shyris.

Television news programs showed images of smoke rising from the submarine. Residents of this port city said they heard an explosion.

Zapater said the submarine was undergoing maintenance, but did not provide any details about what may have caused the fire.

Guayaquil, Ecuador's largest city, is about 165 miles southwest of the capital, Quito.
