A 41-year-old man has died of burns from a fire that broke out where homeless people were sleeping in a tent, Kansas City, Kan., authorities announced today.

Firefighters responded about 8:15 p.m. Monday to a report of illegal burning or a grass fire at the rear of 627 S. Ninth St. Arriving crews were told that homeless people had been sleeping in a tent and that a fire used for heat may have gotten out of control, the department said.

While putting out the fire, crews found the victim with second- and third-degree burns on his upper body. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died Tuesday.

The fire remains under investigation.
