Feb. 07--RICHMOND -- A couple was hospitalized after their home was set ablaze Sunday by a spark from a cigar, according to a county fire official.

County Fire Chief Jim Cox said the city and county fire departments were called to the home at 111 Concord Road in the early afternoon. Waco Volunteer Fire Department and the Richmond Fire Department also responded.

The fire was pretty advanced when the firefighters arrived with heavy smoke and flames coming out of the roof area, Cox said. He added the house went up quickly, "like a match."

Firefighters believe the fire started when resident Gene Jones was smoking a cigar, and a spark landed on a couch. The fire spread quickly, aided by a nearby oxygen tank that Gene Jones was using.

His wife, Marjorie Jones, attempted to put out the fire but was unsuccessful, Cox said. Marjorie Jones then helped her husband out of the house. Cox said the couple is in their mid-70s.

Gene Jones suffered injuries and was immediately taken to University of Kentucky Medical Center. Marjorie Jones initially refused treatment, but Cox said he convinced her to get checked out at Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center. She had singed eyebrows and had breathed in a lot of smoke, he said.

Gene Jones was listed in serious condition Monday afternoon, according to a hospital official. Marjorie Jones was taken to the emergency room at PAC and was treated and released the same day, according to hospital spokesperson Jill Williams. She is currently staying with family members.

The couple also lost two family pets in the blaze, a small dog named Cooper and a bird.

"The home was a total loss," Cox said. Firefighters stayed on the scene for about two hours. Madison County Sheriff's Department and Madison County EMS also responded to the fire.

Family members have set up a fund for the couple at PNC Bank. A bank representative said donations can be made at any branch by asking for the Jones fund.
