Ceres firefighters rescued a man from his home Tuesday morning after he lost consciousness while trying to extinguish a fire on his stove.
As crews responded to the reported fire in the 3600 block of Ninth Street, a dispatcher told them there was a man inside the home, according to Battalion Chief Michael Lillie.
Firefighters entered the smoky home and found the 41-year-old man lying on the kitchen floor. As soon as firefighters knelt down beside him, he awoke but was in an altered state of consciousness, Lillie said.
When the man was safely outside the home being treated by paramedics, firefighters extinguished the flames, which were contained to the stove and cabinets above.
The man told rescuers that he saw his stove catch fire and was attempting to douse it with water when he lost consciousness because of a pre-existing medical condition, Lillie said. He was treated at the scene but refused transport to a hospital.
