A fire chief credited neighbors with containing a blaze in the 2500 block of Baltimore Pike south of Hanover early Wednesday evening until firefighters could get there.

The fire started on the rear deck of the split-level home in West Manheim Township and was quickly contained.

"Two neighbors brought over fire extinguishers and sort of held it from getting any worse," said Pleasant Hill Fire Chief Ted Clousher. "It was starting to burn good. It was good the neighbors ran over when they did."

It took firefighters 10 minutes to put out the blaze, but it caused extensive damage to the deck and melted siding at the rear of the home.

There is nothing suspicious about the fire but no obvious explanation either, Clousher said, so a state police fire marshal has been called in to determine the cause.
