KENT, Wash. -- Fire crews from seven different municipalities responded to a two-alarm commercial fire in Kent on Saturday at a recycling facility on the 700 block of Central Avenue North in downtown Kent.

The building was totally destroyed, as exterior walls and parts of the roof of the complex collapsed. Crews have not been able to enter the building because it was unstable.

On Sunday, firefighters remained on the scene to put out spot fires. Crews from Kent, Auburn, Renton, SeaTac, Tukwila, North Highline, and King County Medic One were dispatched initially.

The fire was exacerbated by the fact that the recycling center specialized in carpeting and carpet padding. The deep piles of carpeting made putting out the fires more difficult, said the Kent Fire Department.

There were no injuries to firefighters or employees. The building was empty at the time of the fire.
