He was brought to safety by fellow firefighters.

July 10--A firefighter injured his back when a chimney collapsed on him during a house fire in the West Englewood neighborhood early this morning, authorities said.

The collapse occurred about 2:15 a.m. as firefighters battled flames on the second story of a home in the 6800 block of South Winchester Avenue.

A firefighter sustained a back injury in the collapse, but other firefighters were nearby and brought him swiftly to safety, Deputy District Fire Chief James Mungovan said.

"Members were right on the scene, right there." Mungovan said. "It was a fast, easy recovery -- immediately right to the ambulance."

The firefighter was speaking with colleagues as they prepared to take him to Advocate Christ Medical Center, Mungovan said.

He was taken in fair-to-serious condition to the hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
