Pork and Beans Burn in Maryland

A wire fell and struck a transformer at the back of the building.

Sept. 04--Hahn Road near Md. 27 was closed during rush hour late Wednesday afternoon following an electrical fire at Hahn's Pork and Beans Store.

The fire began in the back of the building around 4:23 p.m. after a transformer on the outside of the building shorted, said Westminster Fire Chief James Starry.

The fire was contained within a few minutes, but a hazardous materials response team was sent to the scene to check for an ammonia leak, he said. No leaks were found in the building.

About 30 employees were inside the building when the fire began, said Starry. They all escaped uninjured.

According to Starry, the fire started after a wire fell from a pole and hit the transformer on the back of the building. The fire caused charring to the back side of the white building.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. crews were on scene to reattach the downed wire; 546 customers were temporarily without power as a result of the incident, according to BGE spokesperson Aaron Koos. Power was restored to all area customers except Hahn's by 6:20 p.m., Koos said.

Hahn Road reopened around 6:05 p.m. Wednesday, according to a Maryland State Police spokeswoman.
