Blaze Destroys Historic W.Va. Church

Firefighters were able to prevent the fire that engulfed a 140-year-old Benwood church from spreading to the school Monday night.

The fire was reported around 9 p.m. at St. John church and neighbors flocked to the scene.

"The look on these people’s faces is just unreal,” Benwood Police Chief Frank Longwell told WTOV9.com.  “I never thought I’d see anything like this in my life.” 

Longwell said the attached school received some water and smoke damage.
