ACCOMACK COUNTY -- A 60-year-old Parksley man being transported on an ambulance was killed Monday when the vehicle hit a bus.

Sometime after 3 p.m., members of the Bloxom volunteer rescue squad were traveling south on U.S. 13 with the ambulance's lights and siren activated, according to the Virginia State Police.

At the intersection with Wachapreague Road, the ambulance drove through a red light and hit a Star Transit bus, which caused the ambulance to roll over several times, the State Police news release said.

Douglas R. McCready, 60, of Parksley died at the scene. The driver and two other members of the rescue squad received non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver, Peter Surran, 38, of Exmore has been charged with failure to obey a traffic signal, Sgt. Michelle Anaya said Tuesday.

The driver of the bus, who was the only occupant, was not hurt.

The State Police reconstruction team was called to investigate the crash, which remains under investigation.
