Former TN Fire Chief Arrested for Theft of Dept. Funds

Dec. 6, 2023
Paint Rock Volunteer Fire Chief Austin Lewallen, 24, is accused of using more than $13,000 of the company's money for personal purchases.

The former chief of the Paint Rock Volunteer Fire Department in Scott County has been charged with using company funds for personal expenses.

State investigators said Austin Lewallen, 24, allegedly stole more than $13,000 between May 2022 and January 2023, WBIR reported.

He reportedly told investigators he mistakenly used the department's debit card for about 44 personal purposes for such things as fuel, food, alcohol, groceries and other personal items.

He also put a $2,500 down payment on a Jeep the day after he withdrew that amount from the department's account.

The theft, according to the state comptroller, caused issues for the company when insurance and utility bills went upaid. The gas line was disconnected for non-payment.

“During the time this theft occurred, Paint Rock VFD did not have an active board of directors,” said Comptroller Jason Mumpower. “Once Lewallen was removed as fire chief, a board of directors was formed. I encourage the board to establish firm internal controls to ensure money is properly handled and all disbursements are properly documented.”
