James Gumbert, 63, complained of chest pains shortly after arriving at the firehouse for a call, according to the USFA.
He went into cardiac arrest, and some fellow firefighters initiated CPR, while the others went to the house fire.
Gumert was taken to Westmoreland Hospital, where he later died.
He had been with the North Irwin Fire Department for two years.
A second firefighter broke his ankle while getting out of a fire truck at the scene, reports indicated.
Crews said a person living in the home suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital for treatment. The victim’s name and condition hasn't been released.
The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
