A candlelight vigil for the victims of today's fatal house fire in Flint is scheduled 9 p.m. today at the Noonday Fire Department, said Noonday Volunteer Fire Department Chief Gary Aarant.
The fire department headquarters is at 15900 Highway 155 in Noonday.
The Grace Fellowship Church, located across the street from the Flint-Gresham Volunteer Fire Department, opened its doors Friday morning to serve food and comfort to the community.
She said she found out about the fire at about 8 a.m. and things quickly "started rolling."
Karen Comer, the wife of one of the church's pastors, Steven Comer, said a lot of other churches and businesses have been supplying food and other items.
"They're our firemen," she said. "They're here for us all the time and we wanted to be here for them."
Noonday volunteer firefighters, church members and youth, as well as individuals from the community were busy setting up chairs and food as lunchtime was nearing.
People from the Craft Corner convenience store down the street were the first to show up bringing drinks and ice. Brookshire's, Kellogg, Southwest Foods and First Baptist Church in Gresham supplied food.
Grace Fellowship's sanctuary was opened for people who needed to be alone.
Mrs. Comer said there had been a steady flow of people coming through the church all morning.
"All of the community churches have really jumped in. We opened our doors because we were across the street," she said, adding that any of the other churches would have done the same.
Donations of furnishings and other household items are being accepted to help the family who lost their home and possessions in this morning's fire in Flint.
Jerry Waggy, who is building a storage facility a few doors down from the house that burned on Old Jacksonville Highway this morning, said he will donate storage space at the facility for furniture donated to the family.
