NC Firefighter Suffers Fatal Heart Attack after Training

La Grange volunteer firefighter Charles Wayne Spry was found unresponsive on his kitchen floor Wednesday, the morning after participating in mandated physical training.

A North Carolina volunteer firefighter suffered a fatal heart attack Wednesday, the morning after he participated in training at the department.

LaGrange firefighter Charles Wayne, 51, attended mandated physical fitness training Tuesday, the U.S. Fire Administration announced Wednesday. Shortly after 8:15 the next morning, his family found him unresponsive on the kitchen floor, and he died of a cardiac event.

According to Spry's Facebook page, he had been with the LaGrange Volunteer Fire Department since 2012. Spry previously had served with Sandy Bottom Fire and Rescue in West Kinston from 1997 until 2012.

No other details were released concerning his death.
