A firefighter died while battling a house fire in Wynnewood Sunday night.
Sean W. DeMuynck, a firefighter with the Penn Wynne-Overbrook Hills Fire Company in Lower Merion Township, responded to the fire in the 2 1/2-story home on Rosedale Road late Sunday.
A mayday was called at 11:02 p.m., according to a press release from the Lower Merion Township Fire Department.
The rapid intervention team deployed and found DeMuynck unresponsive on the third floor.
He was treated at the scene and taken to Lankenau Medical Center. He died at the hospital a short time later.
"Sean was your classic, all around good guy," Penn Wynne-Overbrook Hills Fire Company Chief Ted Schmidt said. "He fit in everywhere. He helped with anything."
He joined the fire company two years ago.
DeMuynck leaves behind his wife and parents.
He and his wife are Canadian and planned to move back to Canada to be with their families Monday.
"This is a very, very sad day," Lower Merion Fire Department Chief Chas McGarvey said. "We lost a true hero last night."
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Neighbors told local media that fireworks were being set off in the neighborhood just before the fire.
