An Indiana paramedic died Sunday while helping to take children injured in an accident to the hospital.
Owen County EMS medic Brandon Staley, 46, was part of a response to a single-vehicle accident just after 5:30 p.m. in Gosport, The Herald-Times reports. Cris Lunsford, director of Owen County EMS, said the harsh terrain around the crash site made it difficult to reach the four people injured in the accident.
"Two pediatric patients were transferred to the waiting ambulance, where Brandon and his partner treated their injuries while a firefighter drove them to the hospital," Lunsford stated in a news release.
While they were taking the children to the ambulance, Staley began to experience chest pain and lost consciousness. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.
"He was doing what he knows how to do, working on patients in an ambulance," Owen County Sheriff Sam Hobbs told the Herald-Times. "Our EMS staff is devastated, and we need everybody to reach out with prayers for them and the family. It's just a shame, you know. Life's short, and God says we're never guaranteed the next day."
The injured children reached the hospital, where they were treated.
