FL Firefighter Who Died at Crash Scene Identified

Jacksonville Fire Rescue Engineer Michael L. Freeland suffered a medical emergency while operating at a crash scene and died early Thursday.

A Florida firefighter has died after suffering a medical emergency while working a "difficult and prolonged extrication" early Thursday.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said in a press release that life-saving efforts by JFRD members and hospital staff were unsuccessful before Engineer Michael L. Freeland, 36, was pronounced dead at UF Health at 2:12 am.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, Freeland was a seven-year veteran of the fire service.
