Nov. 11, 2021
Baxter Springs Fire Lt. Malachi Brown passed away Thursday morning after suffering burns over 25 percent of his body during an October fire.

A Kansas fire department is in mourning after a veteran firefighter succumbed to severe injuries he suffered during a fire last month.

The Baxter Springs Fire Department shared the simple phrase “No words” in a Facebook post following the passing of Lt. Malachi Brown, who died this morning in a burn unit after suffering burns over 25 percent of his body on Oct. 15 while battling a structure fire.

Due to the extent of his injuries, Lt. Brown had been placed in a medically induced coma and was on a ventilator while battling multiple infections as hospital staff worked to heal him, according to a previous post shared on the department's social media.

Lt. Brown leaves behind a wife and three children.
