CO Fire Marshal Dies after Responding to Call

West Douglas County Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Stephen Smith died from a medical emergency after responding to a 9-1-1 call.

Fire Marshal Stephen Smith with the West Douglas County Protection District died from an apparent heart attack after returning home from a 9-1-1 call on April 23.

Smith, 47, was called out for an electrical issue at a residential dwelling. Once crews confirmed there was no fire, and no injures had occurred, the electric utility agency was notified and Smith returned to the station before going home.

A short time later, crews were dispatched to a medical call where they found Smith unconscious in is car, according to a press release from the U.S. Fire Administration.

Life-saving efforts were performed and he was rushed to Castle Rock Hospital but could not be revived. 

Smith served with West Douglas for 23 years.

He is survived by his wife and two school-age children.
