OK Firefighter Dies from Injuries Related to Crash

Balko Firefighter Jason Smith died Sunday from injuries he sustained in an accident battling a wildfire on April 5th.

The Balko Fire Department is morning the loss of firefighter Jason Smith who died Sunday from injuries he sustained on April 5th while battling the Beaver River Fire in Beaver County when their vehicle rolled over.

Smith and Tyler Morris were burned when their truck rolled over in a ditch while fighting a wildland fire, both firefighters received treatment at University Medical Center in Lubbock’s Burn Unit for their injuries, ABC 7 News reported.

Firefighter Smith was discharged from the medical center on April 19 and had a checkup on April 27. Smith’s wife said, "everything looks positive." Smith was scheduled to go back for a follow-up appointment this week.

“It is with heavy heart and many tears that we share this news, Jason Smith, the Balko firefighter, has succumbed to his injuries received from the rollover crash that he was involved in last month,” Western Oklahoma Fire Coverage said in a Facebook post. “He gave the ultimate sacrifice as a firefighter.”

A GoFundMe has been established to assist Firefighter Smith’s wife and daughters.
