Prairieton fire officials confirmed the death of an almost 60-year member of their department during a house fire Thursday night.
Deputy Chief Dave Phelps suffered an apparent heart attack the department shared on their Facebook page.
A firefighter was transported from the scene to Regional Hospital, Prairieton Deputy Chief Larry Dempsey told MyWabashValley.com early Friday morning.
The fire involved a home on South Power Place, TribStar.com reported.
"He was a highly respected firefighter that had a love and passion for the job," the department shared about the 59-year veteran of the department.
He was recently awarded Mr. IVFA by the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters' Association.
Phelps leaves behind his wife, Mickey, and children, Drew and Ramie.
The fire department protects southern Vigo County, according to WTHI.com.
