A Gaston County man was driving while impaired when he crashed into the back of an ambulance, killing a paramedic, according to a North Carolina arrest warrant.

Jared Logan, 35, of Gastonia, has been charged with second degree murder, driving while impaired, reckless driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt, warrants report. He remains in the Gaston County jail, records show.

The crash happened around 8 a.m. Monday, when a Dodge Challenger struck the back of an ambulance traveling on U.S. 74 near Interstate 85, the N.C. State Highway Patrol says.

The ambulance flipped over, ejecting paramedic Ashley Moore, who was tending a patient in the back of the vehicle, officials said. She suffered fatal injuries.

“The paramedic who was driving at the time was evaluated for injuries and has since been discharged home,” Cleveland County EMS said in a July 6 Facebook post.

“The patient that was being transported is also expected to be okay with regard to any injuries related to the incident.”

Moore, 37, worked nine years with Cleveland County Emergency Services and served as a paramedic/field training officer, Cleveland County officials said.

Jared Logan was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after the crash, officials said.
