PA Chief Finds Son Dying During Shooting Response

April 4, 2018
Duquesne Fire Chief Frank Cobb was responding to a shooting last weekend and found his teenage son dying from a gunshot wound.

A fire chief in Pennsylvania experienced the worst type of EMS run a firefighter can head out on this past weekend when he arrived on scene and found his teenage son dying from an accidental gunshot wound.

WPXI reports that Duquesne Fire Chief Frank Cobb's 15-year-old son had been in some trouble and had run away from home several months ago. Chief Cobb had been searching for the boy, but says he never could have imagined finding him the way he did.

“When I got the call, we immediately reported to the scene and went upstairs to the room where he was," Cobb told WPXI, adding that the teen was fighting for his life at a residence not far from the fire station. "We tried to revive him, but he just couldn't pull through. It was fatal."

Cobb said someone handed his son a gun while they were goofing around and he started playing with it before accidentally pulling the trigger and shooting himself.

“Who hands a 15-year-old child a firearm?” the chief said.

Cobb, who says he tried his best to keep his son out of trouble, is hoping for some justice to come out of all this.

“Last thing my son said to me was, ‘Dad, I'm going to school, getting back on the basketball team, my grades are up. I’m gonna make you proud,'" Cobb said.
