May 8—NEW HAVEN — Five people were injured in a fire at a multifamily residence on Salem Street Thursday morning, according to an official.
New Haven Assistant Chief Daniel Coughlin said crews were dispatched to the fire at 9:54 a.m. and found "heavy flames from the front of the building going up all three floors" on arrival.
Two people were reported to be trapped, Coughlin said, and needed to be rescued. He said the two occupants ultimately were taken out of the building, even though "hoarding conditions" made it difficult.
Coughlin said both victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and three firefighters also sustained minor injuries.
Everyone was transported to the hospital, Coughlin said. Two firefighters have since been released and the third firefighter was expected to be released soon.
Coughlin said the fire is under investigation and there was no further available information as of 12:40 p.m. Thursday.
