Firefighters are battling a four-alarm blaze at an industrial building in New Haven on Wednesday.

The blaze was reported around 6:45 a.m. at a building in the area of Ferry Street and River Street, according to the New Haven Police Department.

The large fire prompted a mutual aid response from firefighters in North Haven, East Haven, West Haven and Hamden, New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said. Over 20 fire companies and more than 100 firefighters responded.

The building houses an auto mechanic shop, storage and other uses, according to Elicker. Two people were sleeping in the autobody shop with permission when the fire broke out and both were able to make it out safely, Elicker said.

As of the late morning hours, no injuries had been reported.

Police asked the public to avoid the area while fire crews were at the scene.
