A Miami-Dade firefighting instructor was burned Friday morning when a live-fire demonstration flashed, reports CBS Miami.

Lt. Kevin McCrea, an 11-year veteran of the department, was taken to Ryder Trauma Center by air rescue.

Fire officials told the media that other people were nearby to put out the flames and assist McCrea with his injuries.

Officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Referring to the prop used, Capt. Louis Fernandez told CBS, “Lt. McCrea and the instructors have used it many times… That puzzles us as to what may have happened.”

McCrea was reportedly in good spirits after the incident.
