Florida Controlled Burn Gets Out of Hand

A fire burning in Clay County began as a controlled burn but got out of hand and charred hundreds of acres Monday afternoon.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. --

A fire burning in Clay County began as a controlled burn but got out of hand and charred hundreds of acres Monday afternoon.

The fire started at about 2 p.m. By 5 p.m., nearly 300 acres had burned east of State Road 21 near Camp Blanding.

The fire was supposed to burn only 50 acres near Sharon Road. According to the Clay County Fire Department, several tractors from the state forestry division along with 16 fire units were working to get the blaze back under control.

By 7 p.m., the fire was about 80 percent contained.

No homes were in immediate danger.
