Wildfires continued to burn Sunday, but Krome Avenue reopened Sunday morning, according to news partner NBC6.

On Saturday, the fire consumed another 2,400 acres before the efforts of fire fighters and a brief rain calmed the blaze slightly.

The total area affected by the fire reached 6,800 acres, roughly bordered by the Florida Turnpike, Okeechobee Road, Krome Avenue and the Tamiami Trail, according to Florida Division of Forestry spokesman Bob Rehr. He added that the fire was considered 50 percent contained as of Saturday evening.

A brief afternoon shower slowed the fire in some areas, but that rain also brought winds from the west, pushing smoke into residential areas. Some smoke reportedly reached Pro Player Stadium, where the Marlins played the New York Mets Saturday evening.

Rehr said some smoke was drifting across the turnpike, but visibility was adequate and the roadway was not closed down on Saturday. The Florida Highway Patrol would monitor the situation Saturday night and Sunday, he said.
