Woman Rescued from MN Apartment Fire

Sept. 9, 2018
St. Paul firefighters rescued the unconscious woman, who suffered serious burns and smoke inhalation, from the third floor.

An apartment fire in a Midway neighborhood left a woman with severe burns Saturday, according to the St. Paul Fire Department.

Responding to a 911 call at 11:43 a.m., firefighters arrived at 1693 Sherburne Avenue to find an apartment on the third floor in flames and its tenant, a 53-year-old woman, unconscious inside.

She had second- and third-degree burns on her arms and suffered from smoke inhalation, said Deputy Chief Dave Berger.

The woman was carried from the building and taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center where she was treated in a hyperbaric chamber to increase the oxygen in her blood.

The fire started on the stove, although it was unclear if it was from cooking or a malfunction, Berger said. It was contained to her unit which is now uninhabitable, as is the unit below due to water damage.

The apartment was evacuated, and about 40 firefighters and medics assisted at the scene.

Two cats were also rescued from the apartment.
