A deadly house fire Monday morning in San Francisco’s Presidio Heights neighborhood left one person dead and two others injured, including a firefighter, authorities said.
The fire broke out on the second floor of a three-story home just before 1 a.m. at 3838 Clay St., according to the San Francisco Fire Department. First responders located an elderly man in the building, officials said, but attempts to rescue him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An elderly woman found inside the residence was taken to St. Francis Memorial Hospital with severe burns. Officials said that she was still in critical condition as of 8:15 a.m.
A firefighter was injured as he attempted to get into the building to rescue residents, officials said. He was treated at a local burn center and released Monday morning.
Firefighters knocked down the flames at 1:57 a.m.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
